Buy a car safely in Nigeria
Most dealers on CarGrid are honest businesses. These checks protect you from the few who aren't.
Before you pay anything
- See the car in person, at the dealer's stand or a public place, in daylight.
- Take a mechanic you trust for an inspection and test drive.
- Never send a "deposit to hold the car" before you've seen it. This is the most common scam.
Check the papers
- For tokunbo cars, ask for the customs duty papers and confirm the VIN on the papers matches the VIN on the car (dashboard and door frame).
- For registered cars, check the vehicle licence, proof of ownership and the plate number match.
- Get a signed receipt or sale agreement with the dealer's name, the VIN and the amount paid.
Look for the Verified badge
Verified dealers have had their CAC registration and car stand checked by CarGrid. It isn't a guarantee about any single car, so still do the checks above.
